Finally a driveway……

Finally a driveway

Well at least I have a driveway now.  Doesn’t go anywhere but its fun going up and down it.

Excavator arrived first thing the other morning and plunked itself down and proceeded to scrap off the sod and a foot or so of soil.  Driveway is a bit over 100 feet long and about 20 feet wide. By hand I figure it would have taken me a month to do.

Big dig

Two dump trucks arrived by 9 am with the first loads of gravel and rotated dumping loads until 2 pm.  I think about 12 loads in total for the first layer of heavier and bigger stones were laid down.   Eventually a layer of 1/2 inch gravel is put down at the end of the process, but while trucks, cranes etc are back and forth the heavy gravel will do.  Great not to be lugging everything up through the grass using a wheelbarrow of shoulder.

Next the foundation was dug out which is now ready for the concrete people to come in and get things going.  That however is waiting on the next set of permits to get done.   Local authority has 10 business days to get back to me on it so hopefully by weeks end or early next week will hear something.

Tuesday should see gravel, dump trucks and a bulldozer showing up first thing in the morning.   I expect I will get up shortly before 6 am and head down to point everyone in the right direction.

Driveway should be straightforward as well as dropping in the culvert at the entrance way.  Since the driveway will be about 100 feet straight up from the road and up the rise I think it will go quickly.   I`ll have a parking and turning circle at the end which will end up being on the south  side of house with the driveway going up past the east side of the house.

I figure leaving about 30 feet or so from the house to grow something edible there, a walkway I guess leading to the porch and my rocking chair.

Also have to draw a sketch on the survey tonight of the building(s) on site and proximity to the road.  That will get attached to the building plan I also have to complete tonight and submit in to the Township who will then have 10 days to get back to me on any changes or an OK to proceed.

Felllow who will be drilling the well is dropping by tomorrow so I will chat with him on what he needs and where to drill it.  I figure about 100 feet down in my area will hit some good water.  First step on being resource independent !

Bought a 250 gallon tank that used to hold olive oil over the weekend.  This big containers are shipped from Italy full of olive oil to be bottled.  The containers are no longer used or shipped back to Italy so I grabbed one to catch rain coming off the roof.   I think two of these will enough to give a good source of water for annuals and a 500 gallon back up.  250 gallons is about 2000 pounds of water so I have to figure out a way to securely elevate it about 3 feet so I can get a gravity feed out of them.

Spent a few hours going over things with the builder on Sunday so things are finally moving.

Small  steps.  More later once stuff happens this week.

Building a house certainly teaches me alot about patience.   Nothing seems to move as quickly as one wants and I have always been fairly impatient.  Usually I mask it by doing other things like researching on the Internet or doing chores.   Cleaning is a good one.  If you ever see me with a broom and dustpan in one hand and mop and bucket in the other its often a good indication I am frustrated and need to do something I can control.  So if you ever need your house clean, frustrate me and stand back !

This works too !

Something cool for a hot day

Gradually moving things down onto the property while I’m waiting for the first set of permits.  Which have finally arrived.  Meeting up next week with the fellow putting in the driveway, sceptic tank and digging out the foundation.   Figure that will take about a week to do but I should then at least be able to drive up and dump off more stuff.   Likely start building a shed to store stuff also once the driveway is in.

Once all that is done I can submit the building plans for stamping.   Then the foundation pour needs to be done followed by the framing, roof trusses, bale walls then plastering.   Some plumbing and electrical work to be done in there as well.

Meanwhile I headed down to Toronto to clear up some banking stuff and clean the boat – frustration again !   Managed to sit back and spend some time relaxing with a book, chatting with fellow sailors and watching the birds.

Looking towards the docklands as the birds fly home

It is an amazing location, a 5 minute drive to Union Station in Toronto or 25 minute bike ride.   Like having a cottage downtown in the big city.
