Hurry up and wait

with 3 comments

Another busy week waiting. Permits have been delayed and delayed as the local authority debates a strawbale house. However will persevere. I think things won’t be done until the early summer 2012 though at this rate as the building season slips away.

Meanwhile I’ve researched out solar panels and figured out the wiring for that. Electrical needs won’t be great. I’ll put in LED lights which draw milliamps compared to the old incandescent and even compared to the CFL curly lights. Fridge and freezer will be the big draws. I’ve never used a microwave for more than popcorn so I don’t think I will end up getting one.

Where do I plant trees

Out in the back 6 acres drawing up lines for fencing and, figuring out tree planting and where to put the ash, oak, chestnut, willow, poplar, maple, birch when tree planting time comes in the fall. Still tinkering where to put the fruit and nut bearing trees, strawberry, aspargus, comfrey, pepper shrubs etc though. Will start digging up shorty for a quarter acre of corn and potatoes next year.

Drawing up the grey water system.  With a steel roof I will collect as much water as I can off it. (In parts of the US now governments will pay for water collection at your home by the square footage of your roof – in Bermuda everyone does it )  Have these big containers to use to collect the water now. 250 gallons each.

Meanwhile I’ve been dealing with the my father’s battle with cancer and passing away early this week.  So in a way grateful for the delays in building so I could spend time with him.  Two precepts he always he told me to consider were:

“Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.”

If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they’ll kill you.
